Being a first-time mom or dad can be hard to navigate. I remember feeling so clueless about almost everything baby related. My newborn had a constant diaper rash that was so hard to get rid of. I tried all the diaper rash creams out there on the market and even did the diaperless method for a couple of hours. It was a whole lotta mess! Don’t recommend it.
I hated the sticky mess the diaper rash creams left behind and even the smell. Not to mention all those chemicals hidden in the ingredient list.
I was looking for a natural diaper rash treatment for babies that actually worked. I turned to a mom forum on Reddit where one user mentioned coconut oil and I jumped right to using it.
Coconut oil is not only natural but also both antibacterial and anti fungal and, on the plus side, it didn’t leave that white residue that I dreaded. It worked so well for me as a diaper rash ointment and cream . I never even tried any of the diaper rash sprays out there.
I also noticed my baby was very sensitive to most wipes, so I stuck to only water wipes because of how simple and short the ingredient list is. This wipe does not leave a sticky residue feeling after use like the other ones in the market do. Neither does it have any strong chemical smell to it.
The only thing that I did not like about Water Wipes is that it is a bit pricier than most other wipes but I tend to stock up on them whenever Target or Amazon is running a promotion, which happens very often.
When my newborn had diaper rash blisters all over, (I dreaded those days) I had to stay on top of frequent diaper changes and making sure the area was dry before putting a new diaper on. For this, I used two separate cloths (one cloth for the front area and a separate one for the butt area) and I made sure I was washing them frequently too.
You can use a hand-held fan to dry the area if that’s easier for you, but I will make sure the newborn belly button is covered with clothes before turning the fan on.
The area where the legs and private part meet should be checked too. It is usually always wet. I seriously don’t even know what they call that area. Leave a comment if you know. Help a mom out lol.
Once dry, apply the coconut oil, starting from the front and working your way to the butt area last. Never the other way around, you don’t want to contaminate the front and cause a UTI (urinary tract infection).
I sometimes apply Vaseline on areas where the diaper straps rubs baby on the skin and these tend to be red. Vaseline just acts like a lubricant barrier. Vaseline can also be used when dealing with an ongoing diaper rash. Apply generously after applying the coconut oil for extra barrier protection from all the pee in the diaper.
Steps to change Diaper
1. Always wash hands clean before and after each diaper change.
2. Wipe the front area clean with water wipes.
3. Wipe butt area clean with a new wipe.
4. Dry front area using a cloth. Dry butt area using a separate cloth.
5. Check for damp/wet areas before applying coconut oil. The area where the leg and private area meet always has moisture and has to be dry.
6. Once all areas have been dry, apply coconut oil to the front area working your way to the back area. Apply to areas where the diaper straps rub on baby’s skin and also the area where the leg and private area meets. This area is known to lock moisture in very easily so you don’t want to skip this step.
7. Apply Vaseline if there is a current rash on the area, this helps to add a barrier between the pee and the rash. You can also add Vaseline to areas where the diaper rubs on baby’s skin.
8. Put a new diaper on (always make sure you are using the right diaper size for the baby) and don’t forget to fluff the diaper at the end to prevent leaks.
And you are done! Breathe, relax, and know you are tackling this diaper rash like a boss mom! You got this mama!
